With college coming up, I really need to work on organizing my room. I have work papers everywhere, as well as school papers. Actually, I have all sorts of papers all over the place. On top of that, there are many other items that are in need of a comfy spot in my room.
So far I have been having the same routine and it is time to change. On a daily basis, my average “cleaning” consists of moving everything off of my desk/chair/floor and moving it all to the top of my bed. When it is time to go to sleep, I move it all back to my desk/chair/floor. It keeps things out of my way, when I need them to be. However, I am having a hard time finding particular things now since it all seemed to get combined no matter how hard I tried to keep it separate.
My biggest problem is not having anywhere to put anything. All of my drawers and hideyspots are all filled and will not budge to let me add anything else. Most likely I will have to build some shelving, but that is still not going to solve my problem for today. Today I need to get all of my work papers together for tomorrow. I am on the morning shift and will not have time to find them before leaving.
As important as that is…I just want to play video games. Have you ever had so much to do, you just shut down and started to do something fun instead? I do, all the time. It seems my list keeps getting longer and I get so overwhelmed I cannot even process what to do first.
Thankfully, today I have decided enough was enough and chose cleaning my room from my list. Now I just have to figure out where to start. The most obvious answer would be to go through every paper I can find and search for my work papers. It makes sense to me. However, once I go through them I would want to put all my organized papers away so they stay organized. In order to do that, I need places to put them. Now the obvious answer is to clean out areas that would be perfect for papers.
I keep staring at my bookcases and thinking it would be perfect to have two shelves just dedicated to my binders and folders that are filled with my organized papers. One shelf would be for my different novels (yes, I like to hand write them) and the other shelf would be for work and school papers. It would be a great idea, but in order to do that I would need to move my books around, plus take off the random stuff I have stuffed in front of the books because they do not have a proper home.
Even though I do not have a place to put those random items, I am going to start there. Most likely the random items will end up in the desk/floor/chair/bed rotation, but at least all of my papers will finally be organized. The heating pad, console controllers, lunch box, rocks (I am obsessed with collecting rocks – all shapes and sizes), and so on can wait until later today or a later date when I get the shelving up.
Let me know how you go about organizing stuff! What is the method you use to decide what to do first? Do you have random items that circulate around on a daily basis? What do you tell yourself to stop you from procrastinating? Is it time to decide what things to keep and what to get rid of?
That last question is tough. It seems everything I see is something I am going to use one day. Sure, I have not touched it in months (except for when I moved to where I am now and brought it with me) but one day I might use it again. Does that happen to you? Knowing the second you throw it out, you are going to have to buy another one because for some odd reason that is the one thing you actually need for whatever reason?
Music will be a must for this cleaning and organizing adventure. It will keep me from getting too overwhelmed. Wish me luck!
